At the heart of our commitment is the restoration of ecological balance. Tar sands, often seen as environmental liabilities, become the foundation for our sustainable future. Through a meticulous and environmentally friendly process, we extract valuable resources that are in very high demand.

In essence, Exodus Energy Evolution transforms naturally occurring environmental wastelands into beacons of sustainability.

Our Impact: A Big LeapTowards a Sustainable Future

Naturally occurring Tar infused waste sands also known as tar sands are a type of unconventional surface level petroleum deposit comprised of a mixture of sand, water, clay, and a dense, highly viscous crude oil called bitumen. Bitumen, often referred to as heavy oil, is a thick and heavy hydrocarbon with unique properties. The composition of tar sands makes them distinct from conventional oil reserves. The heavy oil found in tar sands has applications in producing various products not commonly derived from lighter oils. While there is a notable shift toward renewable energy in the automotive and power production industries, certain sectors such as long-haul trucking, heavy equipment, and large maritime vessels  still depend almost entirely on hydrocarbons derived from heavy oil. Currently, there are no viable alternatives that offer the same energy density, scalability, practicality and efficacy for these specific applications. Global tar sands bitumen reserves are estimated to be over 2 trillion barrels, processing those tar sands in an environmentally friendly way is crucial in meeting the global demand for products derived from bitumen. Our commitment and expertise lie in unlocking the vast potential of tar sands while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

Utah Tar Sands Project

Project Details:

Exodus intends establish a tar sands facility on an  parcel of State-leased land northwest of Vernal, Utah, utilizing its cutting-edge technology. The verified reserve within the parcel is estimated to contain approximately 100 million barrels of Bitumen oil, with a current market value exceeding $7.5 billion USD. When factoring in the value of the sand, the overall project value exceeds $10 billion USD. Opportunities for additional acreage and plant development are available for the right investment partner. Despite employing the most conservative revenue projections, this facility is anticipated to recover its capital expenditure (CAPEX) costs within three years from the start of construction. These projections outlined here are based on the construction of a single plant with a daily oil processing capacity of 3,400 barrels per day (BOPD).  At the initial processing rate, it would take a century to fully process the entire oil reserve. To accelerate the processing timeline to 15 to 25 years, we envision constructing four to six plants of similar or larger size on the site to meet this ambitious goal.

Manufactured Oil and Remediated Sand: The global oil shortage, particularly heavy oil in the United States, is anticipated to persist as the demand for oil continues to grow until 2050. Our ultra-low sulfur (ULS) heavy oil stands out as a unique and globally scarce resource. Utah's heavy oil boasts an estimated sulfur content of less than 0.5%, making it an ideal source for producing premium, low sulfur distillates such as ULS Diesel, Heating Oil, and Fuel Oil. In addition to the widely recognized oil shortages, there is a less acknowledged but notable increase in the demand for sand, contributing to elevated prices. This, in turn, raises input costs for industries like semiconductors and glass, particularly as the trend of on-shoring production processes gains traction domestically. Utah's oil sands differ from Canadian oil sands in that they contain minimal water, allowing for nearly waste-free processing. Simultaneously, our innovative approach remediates the sands, preventing oil runoff into lakes and rivers. The oil sands extraction process involves surface mining up to a depth of 500 feet, followed by sorting, crushing, extraction and separation using a solvent recycle loop, multi-stage centrifugation, and heat to eliminate any residual solvents from sand or bitumen, resulting in a market-ready product that can be further refined to produce a multitude of economically advantageous alternatives.

The Exodus Difference:

  • Innovative Technology: We have pioneered an innovative process technology for extracting oil from tar sands. This breakthrough technology is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and offers a competitive advantage in the market.

  • Environmental and Social Impact: The tar sands processing technology employed by Exodus Energy Evolution offers distinctive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) advantages. It consumes zero water, generates no solid or liquid waste, and reduces CO2 emissions by over 50%, aligning with sustainable and responsible business practices.

  • Lucrative Market Potential: With an estimated 100 million barrels of oil within the verified oil reserve, the project's market value exceeds $10 billion USD. Additionally, the extraction process yields high-value sands, including high-grade silica, construction sand, and frac sand, enhancing the overall project value.

  • Revenue Projections: Despite employing conservative revenue projections, the facility is anticipated to recover its capital expenditure (CAPEX) costs within three years from the start of construction. The revenue forecast for the first five years demonstrates consistent growth and profitability.

  • Premium Products: The project generates premium-priced products, including Asphalt Binder, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), Low Sulfur Bunker/Ship Fuel, silica sand for industrial applications, and high-grade clay. These products provide a remarkable premium to West Texas Intermediate (WTI), ensuring a competitive edge in the market.

  • Reduced Risk Through the Successful Implementation of the Pilot Plant: Valkor Oil & Gas, Our EPC partner and Co- founders, successfully implemented a pilot tar sands plant, validating various aspects of the process. Subsequently, their dedicated efforts led to the development of a significantly superior technology that enhances overall energy efficiency, reduces environmental impacts, and ensures higher-quality product output.

Successful Implementation of Pilot Tar Sands Plant
Valkor has previously undertaken the redesign and operation of a pilot tar sands plant located at the Asphalt Ridge facility in Utah. The purpose was to validate various aspects of the process, setting the stage for broader implementation in a full-scale facility. The initial pilot utilized a more cumbersome and less sophisticated  process developed by others, and its performance was meticulously reviewed and verified by a third party. This external evaluation encompassed operating data, process simulation data, and the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) report, providing an independent technical assessment. The operation of the pilot plant followed a systematic approach, verifying the performance of various technologies against theoretical limits. Changes were introduced incrementally, allowing for observation and measurement of their effects. Since the validation of the pilot plant and the termination of that contract, Valkor has dedicated the past year to the development of a significantly superior technology, surpassing anything currently available in the market. The new design is poised to bring about a substantial reduction in overall energy consumption, diminish environmental impacts through emissions reductions, and foster cleaner production practices, all while yielding higher-quality products.
